Frequently Asked Question's

1. What is Computers for Irish Schools (CFIS)?
Computers for Irish Schools (CFIS) is an initiative of Electronic Recycling that facilitates the donation of old computers and IT Equipment from companies to Irish schools

2. Is there a charge?
Yes – Computers for Irish Schools charges for their service. The charge is the same as standard recycling charges and covers our costs for securely wiping, checking and re-loading computers. Any equipment that can not be donated will be recycled through our sister company, Electronic Recycling. The charge also includes the end of life recycling of the donated equipment – please see FAQ 7 for further information.

3. Who administers CFIS?
Computers for Irish Schools is administered by Electronic Recycling a sister company of CFIS

4. What is the objective of CFIS?
CFIS helps Irish students gain greater access to computer technology so that they can develop the skills needed to thrive in a knowledge-based economy.

5. What is the goal of CFIS?
To extend the useful life of IT equipment being replaced by Irish companies and other organisations for the benefit of Irish Students

6. What are the key benefits of CFIS?
Placing more computers into classrooms means that Irish students get more hands-on opportunities to learn about computers and new technology, to develop new skills and to learn how to make better use of the Internet.

7. What happens to donated equipment when it is no longer needed or becomes obsolete?
Once donated equipment is no longer required by the school, it must be recycled by Electronic Recycling, as part of the conditions of donation. This ensures that end of life donated equipment is recycled as per the Waste Management Act 1996 and the WEEE Directive. The cost of this recycling service has already been included in the original donation fee and all schools benefiting from donated equipment must return end of life goods to Electronic Recycling.

8. What type of equipment do you accept?
In order to minimise the time needed to get the computers ready for donation to the schools, Computers for Irish Schools (CFIS) can only accept equipment in good working order.
CFIS accepts computers of the Pentium III (1ghz) level or better, and Macintosh computers at the Power PC level or better. Schools need Pentium III class or equivalent equipment as this is the level of technology required to handle the education software used in the classroom or for effective connection to the Internet. The donation must also include a minimum 17” colour monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Any suitable application software donations should include all related diskettes or compact discs, applicable manuals and the original product license agreements. If the program was pre-installed, the software manuals and end-user license agreements should accompany the donation.

9. Where can I obtain a donation form?
Call CFIS 01 864 0806 or you can find the form on our web site here.

10. Can I submit a form over the Internet?
